Accreditated ‘B++’ Grade by NAAC

Imphal College, one of the oldest and premier colleges in the north eastern region of India, was established on 20th August 1952. In its initial days it had a very humble beginning as an Arts college at a Mandap (community religious gathering place) at Nongmeibung, Imphal east district. In the aftermath of independence the level of higher education in India was not in a position to be able to fulfil the academic aspirations of its youths. Being a part of the Indian Union the scenario of college education in Manipur was also in a backward state. The main objective of establishing the college was to provide higher educational opportunities to the young population of the state and to let the employed youths acquired collegiate education in the evening for their professional advancement especially to those who belongs to economically weaker sections of the society.

In absence of a permanent land of its own the college was compelled to shift frequently, from the mandap in Nongmeibung to Ananda Singh Academy, to Churachand High School building and finally to the present location at Kwakeithel Lamdong on the Airport Road. The spirit of sustenance against all challenges was one of the main characters of the college.

In the beginning, it was an evening/night college run with the dedicated service of the part time teachers under the leadership of Shri (L) Laishram Achou Singh (Ex-MP) as founder Principal of the college. After him, during its critical days of sustenance, the future of the college was handed over to Shri (L) Thoudam Nilamani Singh, the new Principal of the college and with his unflinching dedication the college could steadily manage to stand on its own feet. In order to meet the needs for survival in the midst of changing circumstances and situation, the college opened the morning shift as well.

Though the college had multifarious shortages in all aspects, the growth and development of the college was a cornerstone in the annals of collegiate education in the state of Manipur. As fortune favours the brave, the college became a full-fledged day college in 1960 with its original morning and evening shifts catering to the academic needs of the students and employed youths as well. The growth and development of the college since then took place in a very systematic manner. In 1962 it became a government aided college and the addition of Science streams was made in 1964.

The college was fully grown up as a bi-faculty institution with annual enrolment of nearly 2000 students and a matching number of teaching staff members. Recognising the service of the college to the society in the field of higher education in Manipur, the State Government took over the college as a Government College in 1979. Consequently, the college was recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1980 under section 2 (f) and 12 (b) of the UGC Act 1956. Earlier the college was affiliated to Guwahati University, Guwahati, and now it is affiliated to Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal.

The dynamic nature of the college has been its normal feature. The functioning and management of the college aims to foster the students in global competencies and to make significant contribution in the national development by retaining its traditional techniques and application of modern technologies. In order to cope with the challenges of the 21st Century, planning and management of the college is being carried out with the consultation and co-operation of the members of the College Planning Board, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and other functional committees constituted to meet the needs and requirements arising from time to time.

With the introduction of NEP 2020, for achieving maximum efficiency and perfection in the management of the college and to become an autonomous model college in the state an Academic Council was established as early as in 2007. The college has a fully functional Academic Council having important functionaries like Dean of Arts, Dean of Science and Dean of Students’ Welfare. While the Principal is assisted by the Deans of different schools in order to streamline academic affairs of the college, the Dean of Students’ Welfare looking after the different issues for the welfare for the students.

The college has been successfully accredited twice by NAAC, Bangalore (1st Cycle in 2010 & 2nd Cycle in 2017) and managed to obtained B+ and B++ (2,84 CGPA) respectively in the previous cycles of assessments. Validity of the 2nd Cycle is upto September 2022 and the IQAC team of the college is preparing for the 3rd Cycle of assessment by the beginning of 2023.

As a result of the latest additions of various academic facilities and infrastructural developments in the college, students who enrolled would find the campus very lively and fruitful.

Ever since the teachers have taken up “Teachers’ Movement for Self Initiative” (TMSI) under aegis of  Imphal College Teachers’ Association (ICTA), the changes in the college has been taking place at a very fast pace in all aspects. This is where Imphal College stands today in pursuit of academic excellence as its motto.
